Structural changes of the male rat aorta were followed from birth to old age in male and female rats. In males, the vessel media width and area progressively increase concomitantly with a decrease of nuclei density during ageing, suggesting an hypertrophy of the smooth muscle cells. These correlations were however not evidenced in females. TUNEL-positive cells were found in media of 4 and 6 months in both sexes, mainly on the luminal side and in the adventitia. Relatively little is known about mammalian pineal neuropeptides. In the present study neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) was examined in the guinea pig pineal gland. NPY-LI was restricted to few intrapineal nerve fibers of faint fluorescence intensity. They showed no preferential localization with regard to the different pineal portions. As catecholaminergic fibers are abundant in the guinea pig pineal gland, the scarcity of NPY-LI fibers indicates that in the pineal colocalization of noradrenaline and NPY-LI is not a regular feature, in contrast to other organs. The possibility exists that in the pineal NPY-LI fibers are not of peripheral sympathetic but of central origin.

This light-microscopic (LM) immunohistochemical study has evaluated the presence and distribution of the pan-neural and neuroendocrine marker protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 in pinealocytes and nerve fibres of guinea-pig pineal gland. The pattern of PGP 9.5-immunoreactive (ir) nerve fibres has been compared with that of fibres staining for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) or neuropeptide Y (NPY). The morphology, fine structure, and degree of colocalization with GABA, somatostatin, and neuropeptide Y of parvalbumin-containing cells were studied with immunocytochemistry in the cerebral cortex of the lizard Podarcis hispanica. Parvalbumin-containing cells make up a morphologically heterogeneous population of spine-free neurons, displaying the morphological features of nonprincipal cells previously described in Golgi studies. Several studies have demonstrated that increases of NPY are associated with reduced alcohol intake and anxiety manifestations. The objective of the present study was to identify efferent and afferent transmitters of motoneurons of the tensor tympani muscle (MoTTM) to gain more insight into the neuronal regulation of the muscle. To identify MoTTM, we injected the fluorescent neuronal tracer Fluoro-Gold (FG) into the muscle after preparation of the middle ear in adult rats. Upon terminal uptake and retrograde neuronal transport, we observed FG in neurons located lateral and ventrolateral to the motor trigeminal nucleus ipsilateral to the injection site. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity is present in the rodent pineal gland. To elucidate possible effects on pineal melatonin synthesis NPY (5 nmol/kg body wt.) was injected into the common carotid artery of male rats. Activities of the melatonin biosynthetic enzymes, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) were determined by means of radioenzymatic methods. Intact light-exposed animal showed increased NAT activity at day- and at nighttime. Blinded animals showed a more than 10-fold reduction of NAT activity after nocturnal NPY injections.
